Caroline “Muffy” (née Tozzer) Buchanan worked as a secretary for the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos.

She studied French, German, and Spanish at Middlebury College and graduated from Smith College in 1941. She went on to earn a master’s degree in French from the University of New Hampshire in 1942. After graduating, she married James O. Buchanan on August 6th, 1942.

 

She died on August 20, 2010.

Mary Lou Curtis joined the Manhattan Project in Dayton, Ohio in 1943. Mrs. Curtis worked in the Counting Room at Monsanto’s Unit III facility, where she developed new methods to measure and analyze radioactive materials, such as polonium, which was used as the trigger for the atomic bombs.
