Inge-Juliana Sackmann Christy is a physicist and author. Sackmann Christy was born in 1942 in Germany. In the 1950s, she immigrated with her family to Canada. Later, she earned a B.A. in Physics, an M.A. in Astronomy, and a Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Toronto. Then from 1968 to 1970 she continued her education through a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Research Council Canada. She competed research at the Georg-August-Universität in Göttingen and the Max-Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics.

In 1971, she moved to the United States to complete a research fellowship at the California Institute of Technology. She later worked for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Sackmann Christy’s research has greatly focused on astrophysics, astronomy, and physics. She has also been named in 14 volumes of Who’s Who in America, two editions of Who’s Who in the World, and one edition of Who’s Who of American Women. 

In 1970, she met her future husband, Dr. Robert F. Christy at the International Astronomical Union meeting. The couple married on August 4, 1973. They had two daughters, Juliana Lilly Christy, born in 1974, and Alexandra Roberta Christy, born in 1976. In 2013, she published a memoir about Robert, Achieving the Rare: Robert F. Christy’s Journey in Physics and Beyond. She is also the author of numerous journal articles.

1971 Moved to the U.S. and joined the California Institute of Technology as a research fellow.

19741976 Worked as a Research Associate at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

1976 Returned to California Institute of Technology as a Senior Research Fellow.

2000 Named an Outstanding Scientist of the 20th Century by Personalities of America.

2013 Achieving the Rare: Robert F. Christy’s Journey in Physics and Beyond is published.
