Tomoko Watanabe was born eight years after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Both of her parents survived the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.

Watanabe grew up in Hiroshima, but did not begin to come to terms with what the city represented until she was 20 years old. In 1986, she founded the ANT (Asian Network of Trust)-Hiroshima, an organization dedicated to international cooperation, peacebuilding, and peace education around the world.
