Elaine K. Bernstein was an American biochemist. By the age of 21 Bernstein already has two masters’ degrees and had joined the University of Chicago’s Ph.D. program in biochemistry. As a graduate student, she was recruited to work on the Manhattan Project at the Metallurgical Laboratory.

After the war, Bernstein continued her research at the Argonne National Laboratory.

Bernstein died in Chicago, IL on November 4, 2005 at the age of 84.
