Dewitt “Bill” Bailey was originally from New Albany, Mississippi, and was working at an Alabama shipyard when he heard of the job opportunities in Hanford. At Hanford he worked as a Special Material Handler for DuPont, and experienced the regime of intense compartmentalization and secrecy.

1951 Joined Army Civilian Service. Moved to Alaska.

1953 Moved to Millington, Tennesse. Began working for DuPont Company again.

1954 Started working on Savannah River Site construction.
