Arthur B. Machen

After joining the Manhattan Project in 1944, Arthur B. Machen participated in key moments in the development of the atomic bomb. He began his work in Los Alamos, where he helped to assemble the first test bomb in Alamogordo. Later, he trained in Wendover, Utah with the 509th Composite Group as a civilian. He was a member of Project Alberta and travelled to Tinian Island with other civilian scientists to assemble the bomb, "Little Boy," so it could be dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. After the war ended, Machen returned to his native New Mexico. He was appointed as the Director of Military LiasionServices for Sandia Corporation in 1952.
