Shigeko Uppuluri was born in Kyoto, Japan and lived in Shanghai, China during World War II. She came to the United States for graduate school at Indiana University, where she met her husband, mathematician Ram Uppuluri.
Carmack worked at the 200 West Area at Hanford during the Manhattan Project.
Martha G. Johnson was a laboratory technician in the Health Division of the University of Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory (“Met Lab”) during the Manhattan Project.
