Elwood Kenneth Colbert was born on February 9, 1932 in Johnstown, PA.

In 1943, Colbert graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He then joined the U.S. Army and was assigned to the Manhattan District Corps of Engineers.

After the war, he attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology to earn a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering.

Fred A. Hoey

Hiroshima Mission

Fred A. Hoey served as a 1st lieutenant in the 393rd Bombardment Squadron. He was the navigator of the B-29 Full House, which served as a weather reconnaissance plane on the Hiroshima bombing mission, and the backup strike plane on Iwo Jima on the Nagasaki mission.

In 1942 Gordon joined the Radiation Laboratory at the Berkeley campus. He worked at the Davis campus as well.
