Spouse to Manhattan Project Worker

Emily Kramer Morrison lived at Los Alamos during World War II. She was married to physicist Philip Morrison.

Emily knew Philip in high school and they both attended Carnegie Institute of Technology. They married in 1938.

In Jennet Conant’s book 109 East Palace, Emily recalled scientists’ reactions to the Trinity Test, “They were all just estatic. It was strange but thrilling in a way. They were all so relieved and happy. But it didn’t last.” Emily explained how the Manhattan Project affected Oppenheimer: “Oppie changed. He was interested in being a great man and dealing with other great men.”

Emily Kramer and Phil Morrison divorced in 1961.
