National Museum of Nuclear Science & History

George S. Monk was a physicist at the University of Chicago Met Lab and an expert on optics. He was married to the mathematician Ardis MonkAccording to the Journal of Glenn T. Seaborg, Vol 3., Monk was the section chief of Technical Section VI, Optics (p. 302).

Monk witnessed Chicago Pile-1 going critical on December 2, 1942. During the Manhattan Project, he helped design the equipment for remote operations at Hanford’s T-Plant and the B Reactor. He was also a signer of the Szilard petition.
