Carolyn Beatrice Parker was born in Gainesville in 1917, during the Jim Crow era. Her father, Dr. Julius A.
Dorothy worked at Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project as a “calutron girl.” After her brother was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor, she was eager to join the war effort, and did so starting in 1944.
Winston was born in April, 1921 in Washburn, WI (where his father was the mayor) and graduated from Washburn High School, Washburn, WI in 1939.
