Joe Dykstra graduated from college in 1943 with a degree in chemistry. He went to Niagara Falls, where he worked for the Hooker Electrochemical Company, producing fluorine cells for Oak Ridge. In March of 1945, he joined the Manhattan Project with Union Carbide at Oak Ridge, working at K-25 on the gaseous diffusion process.
