John Crawford was a physicist and research assistant at the University of Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory (“Met Lab”) during the Manhattan Project. Crawford was one of seventy scientists from the Met Lab to sign the Szilard Petition. Written by physicist Leo Szilard, the petition attempted to prevent the United States from dropping the atomic bomb on Japan.
