National Museum of Nuclear Science & History

Manuel Schwartz was a physicist. He worked at Los Alamos as civilian employee from about July 6, 1944 until January or February 1946. He was principally a member of the theoretical group. He also worked for Dr. Kenneth Greisen’s group, where he did some computational work. His wife, Ethel Schwartz, worked in the office until becoming pregnant with their son, Joel.

He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 28, 1917.  He received his undergraduate degree from University of Manitoba, a Master’s degree from University of Chicago and doctorate from Illinois Institute of Technology.  He was professor at University of Louisville for many years. He passed away June 6, 2005.
