When she was fifteen, Mary (Whittlesey) Kennedy moved to Oak Ridge after her mother, Kleber Whittlesey, had secured a job as a secretary there. She attended Oak Ridge High School and was a member of the school’s first graduating class; she remembers this time in her life extremely fondly. After attending Tennessee Tech and receiving a master’s degree from the University of Miami, Kennedy taught English and remedial reading for a number of years.
