National Museum of Nuclear Science & History

Mathias (“Matthew”) Antone Thennes was born in 1895. He served in WW1 with the 39th Division, 153rd Regiment, in France. He was a skilled carpenter and spent two years constructing and maintaining the buildings at Oak Ridge, some military and some civilian. He also worked at the Ammunition Depot inside the “Secret City” at Oak Ridge from 1943 to 1945. When he left Oak Ridge he continued to work as a carpenter. He passed away in 1987 at the age of 92.
