A few days after arriving from Oklahoma in late 1943, the Drums and their two girls moved into the Hanford Trailer Camp, an orderly community of more than 4,000 trailers and 12,000 residents. The Drum family lived in the desert camp for about 10 months. Opal's late husband, Frank, was one of the first three men chosen to operate the overhead cranes inside the separations plants, one of the most difficult tasks in the plutonium-making process.
