National Museum of Nuclear Science & History

O. R. "Big" Simpson was a second lieutenant in military intelligence in charge of convoys carrying plutonium from Hanford to Fort Douglas, Utah. Simpson, as a classified materials courier, frequently traveled in heavily armed convoys to Utah and Los Alamos by truck and plane. He retired in 1972 as deputy director of security at Hanford.

Reginald C. Augustine

Alsos Mission

Reginald C. Augustine served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In 1944, he was assigned to the Alsos Mission, the Manhattan Project’s counterintelligence mission in Europe to determine how far Nazi Germany had gotten on the path to building an atomic bomb.
