Priscilla (Greene) Duffield (1918-2009) was secretary for J. Robert Oppenheimer at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project.
After receiving her degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, Duffield was soon hired by Ernest O. Lawrence to be his secretary at the school’s Radiation Laboratory.
It took a great deal of effort on the part of J. Robert Oppenheimer to convince Lawrence to let Duffield leave Berkeley and join him at Los Alamos. Once she became a part of the Manhattan Project, Duffield quickly became indispensable. She managed the project office at Los Alamos while handling all of Oppenheimer’s correspondence. During her time at Los Alamos, she met and married a physicist named Robert Duffield.
