Robert Schwerin was drafted shortly before the end of the war, in 1945. Following the war, he re-enlisted to avoid being put on a desk job. Schwerin deployed to Europe, to serve in ordnance. He was brought on to post-war nuclear research, and sent back to the United States to be deployed to Los Alamos. There, he worked a security guard, often guarding plutonium.
