Thomas Guilfoyle was a member of the Military Police at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Lab from 1943 to 1945. Following the war, he went on to receive a degree from the University of Chicago.

After being warned by British scientists regarding the potential danger were the uranium ore to fall into the wrong hands, Sengier decided to transport half the uranium stockpile from the Congo to the United States in 1940.
