Van Reid worked for the United States Engineer District Office. He was in charge of housing layout in the early history of Oak Ridge and had nearly 10 years of service.

Nichols, District Engineer, received official commendation and praise for the “faithful performance of duty” and awarded citations in recognition for the completion of “faithful and satisfactory service rendered to the War Department and to the Nation.”
