Winona Schiepel was as a civilian contractor for various projects in the K-25 plant at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Her work included testing the extensive piping throughout the complex and fixing the filaments in light bulbs. She did not know the purpose of her work in Oak Ridge, and was surprised to learn that it had been dedicated to the creation of the atomic bomb.
