William E. Caldes studied chemical engineering at Princeton University. In 1943, he was recruited to join the Manhattan Project, and became the 19th project member at Los Alamos. He witnessed the Trinity test. His wife, Margaret Caldes, joined him at Los Alamos. After the war, he had a long career at Sandia National Laboratories.
