John Mendl was a member of the 1st Ordnance Squadron in the 509th Composite Group stationed on Tinian Island in the Pacific. He specialized as a machinist in the Army Air Force in Georgia and South Carolina before volunteering for a position with the 509th. After the war he worked as a carpenter and building contractor.
