Nicholas Constantine Metropolis was born on June 11th, 1915, in Chicago. In 1936 he received his bachelor’s degree, and in 1941, his doctorate, both from the University of Chicago, and both in experimental physics.
Anthony J. Okleshen worked in the shop at the University of Chicago’s Metallurgical Laboratory.

Frank Pittman (1914-1993) was an American chemist and government administrator. Pittman was born in Sacramento.
